I've noted in conversation many times in the past that there's a tendency to a sort of 'hive mind' about what you are supposed to like and not like in fandom (though this is maybe not as true as it used to be.) So, just for fun, what important/critically lauded/popular sf books, movies or tv series can you just not get what the fuss is about? Or understand the fuss but don't work for you?

Okay, so here's a starter from me:

I can understand why people consider 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner to be classics of sf cinema, but try as I might to like them I find them a bit...boring. I'd rather watch Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan or Back to the Future again than either of them.

*Prepares for brickbats...!*

For Christmas I bought [livejournal.com profile] pennski three animated movies: How to Train Your Dragon, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Princess and the Frog and we watched them all over the Christmas week. We also went out to see Tron: Legacy.

On the films themselves, How to Train Your Dragon was easily the best: fun, funny, exciting and with good characters (I found out today it was made by the same filmaker as Lilo and Stitch, one of my favourite animated films of recent years, so maybe no great surprise I liked it.) I also enjoyed The Princess & the Frog a great deal, though with a few reservations. The worse of the batch was, by far, Cloudy...Meatballs. Apart from a couple of clever lines and in jokes this was just a mess. It got quite well reviewed and I'm at a loss to understand why. My expectations for Tron were set pretty low - I've always thought the first was overrated. It looked very pretty but the acting and script are both pretty appalling. That said, I quite enjoyed the sequel. It didn't really do anything very new but it didn't actively annoy me (although there is an entire other post on the issues with the facial animation).

But what is the question I mention, you ask?

Well, this is specifically for my American friends, and forgive me if it's something I've asked before:

What the hell is US cinema & TV's thing with father and son relationships? I can't count how many times this seems to be the main character driver (in an incredible number of animated films for one). It's a driver in Dragon, Meatballs and Tron. Even Princess is driven by a daughter trying to fulfil her father's ambitions.

It seems to me from what I've seen that there is something deep in the American national psyche here and I'd be fascinated to get ideas on why this might be. It's not a theme you tend to see as frequently in the UK (in the UK it is more frequently class, overtly or covertly, that is the common theme).

Any thoughts?

I picked up the DVD set of the television series 'Demons' as something to watch while cycling. My expectations were low, and while it wasn't the total train wreck I was expecting, on the whole my expectations were met!

Aside from Philip Glennister's American accent, which was as risible as I'd heard, there was one major issue with the series: it is as dumb as a stick, in so many ways.

Cut for spoilers, just in case )

On the other hand, you have the new Star Trek movie, which on the whole gets it right. Well-cast, good script and special effects.

Having just finished Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemans' Union for the BSFA awards panel at EasterCon, can I just say that the Coen brothers are absolutely the right people to be doing the screen adaptation of this, as has been announced.

It strikes me that there is still a certain amount of what I would call 'White-Man Burdenism' (ooh I've found an ism...) in Western film making.

As I finished work late yesterday and ended up in the house by myself I decided to watch Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith.

And you know, it really doesn't get any better on second viewing. The acting, even from good actors, is bad, at best. Sure it looks pretty, but no more than some computer games I've played. Mr Lucas needs to learn that busier is not necessarily better!

I'm not going to be rushing to watch it again any time soon...

We've booked to see a preview of Serenity at Southampton tonight.

Yah!

This one courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] raanve. Mark with a number the films you have seen, otherwise remove the number. If you've seen over 70 you are official a Film Whore. Then add a film to the end.

Mark the ones you saw. More than 70 makes you a movie whore....
Type in the number if you have seen it, remove the number if not, then count. And add a movie to the end.
