Archer's Goon might well have been my first DWJ as well - I saw some of the TV series aged about twelve, and borrowed the book from the school library to fill in the gaps. Then I read Howl's Moving Castle and Fire and Hemlock, which had a fairly tangible effect on my life in that I'm pretty sure that's where I got the idea that I'd like to go to Oxford. Howl's Moving Castle helped get me there, because it sparked a long-term interest in John Donne's poetry... so I owe those two books quite a lot.
I've always been put off by the cover of An Instance of the Fingerpost (how shallow of me!) but should probably give it a try...
