Obviously we have a lot of Sky+ recordings to catch up with, but we started with the Doctor Who Christmas special.

Overall I liked it, especially compared with last year's. This is old news for most of you I'm sure so just a couple of negative comments along with the tremendous fun. Behind cut as I know it hasn't reached veryone yet.

1. I sure do get fed up with RTD's habit of having secondary characters telling everyone how wonderful the Doctor is. We know he is wonderful, we don't need to keep being told.

2. RTD once again reminds us that he really isn't much of a feminist. If I'm reading this correctly the villain seems to mainly be being punished for wanting to be independent. Okay, her actions are a bit of an overreaction, but there is no acknowledgement that the role of a woman in the society is not ideal. And the less said about Rosita's reward for bravery is to become a nanny the better...

Overall, I enjoyed it too, but I think Tenant's Doctor isn't really growing anymore. I would have really liked him to take a moment to reflect on Donna and all that properly, but that would have been a bummer I suppose. But it was fun and engaging to see another "Doctor" interact with him.

My reaction was much the same as Neil Gaiman's - I enjoyed it, and kept waiting for the moment when enjoyment was going to spill over into love, and it never happened.

It was fabulously steampunk, and I liked the ridiculous orphan-powered machine that had no explanation whatsoever. Because machines powered by orphans (rather than big strong navvies) are always better.

But yes, I felt darling Mercy was a complete straw feminist. I'm not a creative person, and I could think of dozens of more interesting motivations which would have rung more true.

However, I was very happy that Ten didn't go off on his own in the end. Also glad that we didn't see the jolly dinner, but still. Last year's Christmas ep made me want to cry (perhaps it's just as well I watched it in April!)

Last year's Christmas episode made me want to cry to - but not necessarily for the right reasons (let's just say that I thought it was by far the weakest of the Christmas specials so for and leave it at that!)
