I finally did something yesterday that I never thought I'd do - I joined a gym (or 'Health Club' as they insist on calling it).

The main reason was to save me time. I know that this may not seem to make much sense but bear with me!

I've been doing my exercises at home for the last few years, but with moving the equipment about and the working day seeming to get longer and longer its getting to be a real strain to fit everything in. But the gym is not far from the office which means I can do my exercise at lunchtime. I also get a company discount!

But the main advantage is that it should give me up to an hour extra time in the evenings, 3 days a week!

WisCon report continues to be scuppered by other things - I've got a review of a 'Guys and Dolls' recording to write as soon as possible. Ho, hum.

I've always quite fancied having a go at fencing but I have dodgy knees so the fact you seem to spend half the time in a crouch would probably not do me any good!

I'm kind of at the end of the process now. I got up to 17 stone (238 pounds) one time but in the last 3.5 years I've got down to around 12.5 (175 pounds), which was the target my doctor set for me. My ideal would be 11.5 (161) but I'm aiming to get down to 12. That last half a stone is a bugger to get rid of though!

I used to do fencing in high school, with the university club where my dad teaches, and this year I finally got back into it with the club at UW in Madison. I can definitely see that having dodgy knees would be a problem, although usually when people screw up joints it seems to be ankles (they let their back foot roll over when they lunge).

I gained probably about 35 pounds in grad school; it was getting ridiculous. I'm eventually aiming to get back into a size 7, which is sort of stupid given that women's clothing sizes in the US are largely random numbers, but it's hard to pick a weight to get back to because I'm trying to build muscle mass while losing weight, and of course muscle weighs more than fat--I have definitely noticed over the past year that my pants keep getting baggy and I have to go to the thrift store and look for ones that fit better, so I'm hoping to continue that process for awhile. Anyway, I'm hoping to eventually reach a point where most of my pants are size 7 or thereabouts. :p

You really lost a lot of weight! I think it gets harder to keep losing the more you lose; I'm impressed at how much you've managed so far.
