So I had my two-yearly eye test yesterday, mainly inspired by the fact that I think I'm starting to go a bit short-sighted.
The bad news is that, yes, I am started to lose close vision but the good news is that it's not significant enough to need corrective help yet so I don't need new glasses. In another two years it might be another story...
While I was waiting for my fields test one of the opticians was explaining to a young woman (early twenties I'm guessing) quite why he wasn't enthusiastic about the laser operation to correct short-sightednesses. But one thing he did say was that it can't correct the type of long-sightedness that you develop as you get into your forties, so even if the operation was completely succesful you'd still have to wear glasses when you get older anyway.
