Apparently, (if you are a screaming geek and follow the double-secret probationary backstory) the Jedi wiped out the Sith decades (Centuries?) ago To keep them from doing what Darth Sidious ended up doing. Oh, and apparently all the Sithians are named Darth, which must be terribly confusing at dinner parties or when looking for their number in the telephone directory.
