As a break from the whole 'whining about my health' thing (which is no doubt boring everyone else as much as it is me!), another question:

Which writers do you think should get more critical attention than they appear to?

My example: C. J. Cherryh. She has been writing classy, clever and complex (excuse the accidental alliteration!) sf for over 30 years. She's won awards in the past (though not recently). She must still be fairly popular as she has been continuing to publish new novels regularly over that time (although I don't expect that her books are to everyone's taste.) Yet I've seldom seen a critical article about her writing.

Judith Tarr. Her range is astonishing, and her books are deep, complex, nuanced and challenging. Yet she is ignored -- and the much weaker, much less original G G Kay is lionized.

Pretty much all of them? A few authors get a ridiculously disproportionate amount of coverage, the rest of them scurry about their lives unknown to man.

I agree absolutely about Cherryh. Though I would add Bujold: also classy, clever and complex!
