Visual treat but...

We finally got to see Mirrormask last night and I start to understand many of the reviews I saw.



To start with it is visually stunning, particularly once you get into the dream world. Dave McKean has a weird mind and I kinda like it (early on pennski muttered 'This would never be a commercial hit').

But the script was weak. I bow to few in my admiration for Neil Gaiman but this was pretty much quest plotting by numbers (like the faithful friend betraying our heroine for money and then repenting). Also some elements of the plot seemed to be untimely ripped from Gaiman's own Coraline.

So, fascinating to watch, but better luck next time with the scripts, guys!

I pretty much concur. I was especially let down by the "it was all a dream" ending. Spousal Unit says this is Dave McKean's influence -- that Dave prefers the real world to remain distinct from the fantasy (S.U. may, perhaps, have read this somewhere). Me? I like them bumping up against each other and spilling over into each other's realms.

Well, plotting isn't exactly Gaiman's strong suit.

I don't watch many movies, but this one has been recommended to me. I'd have to overcome my irrational dislike of Dave McKean's artwork to get myself to watch it, though, I guess.
