Disappointment

Got home after work yesterday to a phone message from the people who we were going to Japan with to say that they have had to cancel the trip because not enough people have booked to go.

So we're going to try and rebook the trip for next year and in the meantime find somewhere else to go in November.

But, bugger.

Bugger indeed. But, why go to Japan in 2006, when you could go in 2007 and take in WorldCon while you're there...?

There will be a lot of non-Japanese SF/book fans around Yokohama/Tokyo and lots of friendly Japanese fans to meet and get advice for "must see" places (and perhaps an invite to crash on their floor/tatami?)

I've got my worldcon membership already, and I'm sure there will be a bunch going cheap from all those people that thought it was a great idea to have a Japanese worldcon and now realise how expensive it's going to be and will be willing to sell on the membership at a very reasonable rate.

You could even try sorting out something like car hire etc. with some other fans for travelling around afterwards (actually you probably *don't* want to do car hire, but travelling companions can be fun!)

Next year the world is our seafood of choice.

This November however, we are now going to (squeaks with excitement and bad spelling) Eygpt!

Oh, fab. I have friends who've been recently, so if you want reams of advice - what to do, what not - I'm your man. Do drink the hibiscus stuff, apparently it's gorgeous...

Definitely something we are going to look into. Somehow, going to our first worldcon in Japan (rather than USA or UK) seems a very us sort of thing to do!
