So, the last episode of this season of Doctor Who.
Well, it was a bit of a rum deal, wasn't it?
I didn't hate it, and there were things I definitely liked: the mythic qualities of Martha's journey, The Doctor's reaction to The Master's death, Martha's decision to stay and her straight-forward way of telling the, as usual clueless, Doctor why. I was amused by the 'Jack is the Face of Boe' revelation but not sure it wasn't rather silly.
Like pretty much everyone else around here, The Doctor as Tinkerbell was just, well, silly. I can see where it is a sort of resolution of the 'Doctor = Lonely God' thread but, oh dear. And as soon as we were told what the paradox machine was for the ending became obvious. And yes, I know Doctor the House Elf wasn't terribly impressive by cinematic standards, but on a BBC budget was a reasonable effort (maybe better not to have tried?).
But my other reasons for being disappointed aren't some that I have seen mentioned by others yet. One is that it is a terribly grim episode. The previous end of season stories may have had a real sense of jeapardy and both feature losses in some way or another, but they were'n't so depressing.
But also, and this surprised me given how much I loved Blink but in honesty there just wasn't enough of the Doctor in it. The Doctor should not be a bystander in the season resolution of his own show.
I think this just matches my feelings from way back in the first season: RTD may be a good show-runner (and every time I see him interviewed I can almost forgive his worst excesses because of his enthusiasm) but he is not by any means the best writer on the show. Maybe it's time for him to hand over the reigns?
But the approval ratings for the episode were extremely high, so what do I know?
Later there may be another post on the season as a whole. I bet you can't wait, can you?!
