The new companion is going to be Donna, from "The Runaway Bride".

Hmmm.

Still processing this. My gut reaction is "oh dear".

Intellectually I can see a possibility of where they are coming from. You've had Rose, who was the mutual love interest followed by Martha, who had the unrequited love thang going on. Now you've got a companion who would have a more adversarial relationship with the Doctor. And when Martha returns theirs could be an interesting relationship. And I really don't want to write it off without seeing what they are going to do. After all, nobody thought casting Billie Piper would work when she was first announced.

But, I dunno, it just feels an odd decision, but I can't quite put my finger on the cause of my disquiet.

Part of it is that with everything that has been going on (Martha, at least temporarily, leaving, different companion for Christmas special, returning character as new companion, etc) I'm wondering whether there is either some production struggles of some kind happening, or whether there is something 'plotting'-wise that this is intending to distract us from.

A better adversarial relationship would be to have someone like Liz Shaw, who can meet the Doctor on his own ground. I had hoped that medical student Martha might do this, but 'twas not to be. Instead we're going to get a lippy chav, who will be adversarial on general principle, not with any justification. Is that what we want as an example? I don't think so!

I've always found Catherine Tate to be completely unfunny, and she annoyed me every time she opened her mouth to bleat like a wounded dugong (although that's a slur on the dugong) on last year's Christmas special.
I don't want to watch more of that character.
