James Patterson grump
Jun. 5th, 2005 01:18 pmI've just finished James Patterson's Alex Cross novel 'Pop Goes the Weasel'. Don't get me wrong, I like Patterson's writing generally, particularly the Alex Cross thrillers. It is nice, once in a while, to read a thriller where the 'hero' isn't as big a psycho as the people he is chasing.
So what's my problem?
It's Alex Cross' bloody family. Okay, I appreciate that it is nice (and rare) in fiction to have families that are loving and supportive but the gooey sentimentalising of the children is just sickly.
The worst his children do are bicker amongst themselves a bit. They are always telling each other how much they love each other. The children are very bright, good at sport, the boy has a beautiful singing voice and easily joins a difficult-to-get-into choir, etc, etc.
Maybe it's my British cynicism coming to bear, but no children are that perfect. Not without medicinal help anyway...
