Sometimes, try as you might...
Feb. 21st, 2006 02:26 pmI've been away on a one-day conference (departmental culture - don't ask...!) and I've just been having one of those runs of luck on the roads.
The venue is about an hour away from home so yesterday I gave myself an hour and three quarters to get there - plenty of time, even in Monday traffic. So of course there was an overturned lorry on my only sensible route and it took me two and a half hours to get there.
Driving back from the hotel to the office this morning, should have been about a half hour, I was sent on an unexpected diversion which meant that I got stuck on some single-track roads (only usually enough room for one vehicle at a time, for my non-Brit friends) and ended up sitting still for 10 minutes at a time while vehicles manouvered their way around each other. Net results: it took me an hour and a half to get to work. I had a few scary moments as well, having to drive the car up some road edges, ending up tilted at some very unsafe angles!
I admit that this was not helped by ending up in the bar until the early hours this morning - way past my normal bed-time!
