Goodbye 2011
Jan. 2nd, 2012 04:40 pm2011 was such an odd year for me. There was nothing that I could point to and say 'that was really awful', on the contrary there was a lot that was good about the year. Yet I still ended the year feeling unhappy with it.
Mainly I guess it was the continuous uncertainty at work, together with (and no doubt abetted by) the frequent bouts of ill-health. Having to help with the latest round of redundancies right at the end may have coloured things dimmer than they really deserved.
I'm also disappointed in myself for not keeping up with the review blog as much as I'd hoped. I had a vague plan to post once a week when I first started, but that was never really going to be practical. But I've posted nothing since some time in September (although I've got several semi-written reviews); this is really just life catching up on me and it was the thing that had to go.
But, being positive, there were some good things this year:
1. Trips to both Norway in January and Italy in September were fantastic. Very different styles of holiday but both good.
2. Two enjoyable shows with the newly-renamed Andover Musical Theatre Company. I was so chuffed to be able to sing both 'Stars' (from Les Miserable) and 'Razzle Dazzle' (from Chicago) in the concert.
3. The new role at work. This is obviously a work in progress at the moment, but it is still quite exciting - especially once I can get rid of the vestiges of the old role!
I've stopped doing New Years Resolutions, since they can so easily become something else to get stressed about, but I do have some good intentions! So:
1. Spend more time playing the guitar, especially as I am not doing the new show.
2. Get the eating and exercise habits more sorted.
3. Be less ill! Okay, not something I can necessarily do something about but I can hope...
4. Get some of the bits and pieces done around the house organised that I haven't got around to (Get a regular cleaner in, get electricity run out to the shed with the treadmill in it, etc)
5. Be more sociable! When I'm tired and a bit down it is very easy for me to be insular, so this year I have not spent as much time physically with friends as normal. There's a couple of close friends that we normally see regularly who I didn't see at all last year. We're booked for Eastercon (although we will have to commute - which isn't too much of a hardship; it only takes about an hour) and WisCon and I plan to get to the First Wednesday sf group meetings in Oxford much more regularly this year.
6. Update the review blog at least occasionally, rather than not at all!
Realistically, I know that the job is going to take a lot of my time and mental energy this year, so I don't know how much of my plans will come to fruition, but it's good to have some plans!
