You are as kind as it deserved! Nothing was *scary*. Neither the pirates nor the siren were particularly scary, and as the pirates weren't scary to begin with, seeing them cower away from the siren meant nothing. Nothing was made of the fact that Amy could only fight them because they were afraid of getting scratched.
And the Doctor of old would have immediately diagnosed that an extraterrestrial force must be at work, and started making the necessary deductions. The present Doc just takes it as given that something nasty is happening and we must all run away from it.
