Too, too much, oh my television
Oct. 10th, 2012 08:56 amI will admit to the new version of 'Hawaii Five-O' as a guilty pleasure. I love the 'buddy movie' thing that McGarrett and Danny have going on and, oh, the scenery porn!
I'll admit it has problems: it's a fairly routine procedural, supporting characters are rather dull and it really, really fetishises military service.
But absolutely worst is the appalling product placement. They very obviously have a deal with Microsoft and in a recent episode I watched (about mid-way through season 2) someone used MS Instant Messenger to video conference a colleague. Putting aside the 'TV magic' of being able to get that fast a connection on 3G on an island in the middle of jungle, the camera shows them pressing the button to launch the app., selecting the video option and selecting the recipient, putting the call through, etc. Seriously, every damn step in the process!
It's really distracting....
