Just been to see King Kong. I'm still digesting - I'm not sure whether it is approaching a work of genius or total self-indulgence...

A few comments behind

It is too long. At least half an hour could have been shaved off by getting rid of some of the character development (never thought I'd complain that there was too much character development in a movie!) that doesn't go anywhere and cutting the length of some of the set pieces, almost all of which go on for too long.

Special effects in general are very good, bar a couple of ropey compositions (particularly in the 'Brontosaurus Stampede' scene).

Jack Black was great fun as Denham, but then it is the sort of larger than life role he excells at. Naomi Watts was also good in the tough role of Ann Darrow. She imparts a 'silent movie star' quality to the part. I'm not so bothered about Adrian Brody's Driscoll (though [livejournal.com profile] pennski disagrees). But then it's a bit of an odd part: he isn't really the hero and has no real part to play in the ending at all.

Overall I really enjoyed it, but it is a glorified b-movie.

And I'm sorry but it just isn't natural for someone to look as much like his dad as Colin Hanks does now. I suspect there's cloning involved somewhere...
