Techie Heaven
Mar. 4th, 2007 09:05 pmAnyone who has been in our house will know that our life is a constant fight between having space to move and accumulating stuff.
We had a clear out of DVDs and videos a couple of weeks ago, leading to a bag of DVDs going to my mum, another bag on hand for donating to the Meaneys and the rest going to a charity shop.
But our biggest problem at the moment is that I buy many CDs and we are running out of space to put them. I've been looking at techie solutions to this but all of them seemed fairly expensive. But then someone advertised a media streamer (Virtuoso MC-500 if anyone is interested) on the bulletin board at work for £75. Now this is not the most up to date piece of kit but I'm prepared to pay that sort of money for something as an experiment.
So this afternoon I spent a happy couple of hours setting the box up (I had to buy enough ethernet cable to run from the broadband router upstairs down to the living room). And after some fiddling around it seems to all be working okay. So we now can rip all our CDs onto the PC (most of which are already there) and stream them down to the downstairs amp, using the TV to select tracks.
I've upgraded the supplied software so that I can use iTunes as the front end, which is what I tend to use on the computer anyway. So once everything that needs to be ripped has been ripped (and I've sorted out the tags that need fixing) we can stick the CDs into boxes and clear a bit more much-needed space in the living room. Hoorah!
We have also this weekend spent some of
pennski's bonus on buying a new mattress and replacing our rather battered coffee table.
I call that a result.
