So we have a few friends over on Saturday for my birthday 'do'. As they come in, we offer them drinks 'tea, coffee, juice, white wine, red wine...'.

What did everyone pick, without exception? 

Tea.

(Not that wine didn't follow!)

Yes, I was going to query "old" as well.

Illustratively: when my husband and I were at university, he had a room on the ground floor near an entrance to college. So his room became a meeting place for many of our friends who would drop by as they passed. It rapidly became known as "the tearoom" because... yes. Lots of tea was drunk at all hours of the day or night.

He was 18 at the time.

Well yes, it was noticeable that with our coffee-mainlining friend not able to make it this time, we actually didn't make any coffee AT ALL! (This is unheard of).
