In which I meet a musical hero
Sep. 24th, 2011 07:02 pmOn Wednesday we went to see Gordon Giltrap perform at the Lights theatre in Andover (where my musical theatre group normally perform).
I've been a fan of Giltrap's since a friend introduced me to 'Perilous Journey' and 'The Peacock Party' when I was a teenager. For those who don't know the name, he is a folk guitarist, probably best known for the tune 'Heartsong', which was used for the BBC's Holiday Programme for about ten years. But if the main rhythm riff of 'Heartsong' is the only Giltrap piece you know, you are not hearing anything close to his full range. There are various selections of his music on YouTube.
I am delighted to say that he was absolutely fantastic live. As a mediocre - mainly rhythm - guitarist, I am astonished when I see that kind of flawless virtuosity. Not only that, but he turned out to be a funny and charming host.
So during the interval I bought his latest album and got him to sign it.
Now after all the conventions I've gone to and all the writers I've met you'd think I'd be better at this 'meeting heroes' stuff, but all I managed was a slightly incoherent 'I've been a fan of your stuff since I was a teenager'. 'Fan of your stuff'. Honestly!
Anyway, next time he's at the Lights I'll be there!
