On a lighter note, I rewatched the 2009 Star Trek movie the other day with the writers/director commentary on. Overall I still like it, in fact I may have enjoyed it more this time than the last viewing, but there are still left me with a few thoughts:

1. I hate the new bridge design, it's far too bright and shiny. Somehow it makes it difficult for me to work out the layout. I feel like it's been filmed in an IKEA store.
2. I was amused in the commentary that one of the things Abrams was worried about was getting women to go and see the film. They really don't know the composition of Star Trek fandom! That did lead to thoughts about the pros and cons of having fans of the series do the reboot (e.g. Doctor Who) and non-fans (e.g. Star Trek).
3. I still can't warm to the new Captain Kirk: too much arrogance, not enough charm. It did occur to me that Chris Hemsworth, who plays Kirk's dad in the movie, managed to balance arrogant' and charming so well in Thor that he would have made a much better choice for Kirk himself.
4. I do like most of the rest of the cast, especially Karl Urban's McCoy; I'd love to have seen more of him. Bruce Greenwood brought great gravitas to Pike as well, so I hope they find a way of using him in the sequel.
5. Finally, the ending - giving Kirk command of the enterprise - just doesn't work for me, not after that length of service. The events of the film might led to him getting a promotion, but not straight to ship command.

Booked!

I've booked tickets to see the new Star Trek film on Saturday.

As someone who is not really much of a Trekkie, I'm more excited by this than I was expecting!
